Second Semi-Finals between Mumbai City FC and Atletico de Kolkata in ISL 2016 Semis ends on a bloody note

Atletico de Kolkata and India national team defender Pritam Kotal had a deep cut under his left eye following a brawl that broke out as soon as the referee blew the final whistle ending the second leg of Indian Super League semifinal between ATK and Mumbai City FC. A goalless draw after regulation time on Tuesday in Mumbai meant Atletico de Kolkata entered the final, winning 3-2 on aggregate.

The second leg of the semifinal showed early signs of getting volatile after Atletico de Kolkata defender Robert Lalthlamuana was sent off in the 41st minute for his second bookable offense. For the rest of the match, Athletico de Kolkatta closed down their goalmouth, frustrating India skipper Sunil Chhetri’s Mumbai City FC.

It is not really clear what led to Mondal’s injury but there was blood flowing at the side of his face when the television camera zoomed on him once.

Last year’s ISL final between winners Chhennaiyin FC and FC Goa too ended with an ugly brawl between players of both teams and officials. Following that FC Goa boycotted the presentation ceremony and then filed a police complaint against Chennaiyin FC’s Brazilian star and captain Elano Blumer, accusing him of assault.
