How Twitter reacted to NDTV Ban

The media and opposition parties conveyed sharp condemnation when it came to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s decision to ban NDTV India for a day on 9th November. The center had banned the channel because of their coverage of the Pathankot attack. The naysayers also called this an attack on the democracy of India calling this decision reminiscent of Emergency Days.

Most of the non-BJP parties and media bodies also demanded an immediate withdrawal of the ban and some members of parliament had some criticism regarding this whole issue. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also suggested that all newspaper and media channels should go off air and not publish on that day as a mark of solidarity with NDTV.

This was also seen on TV today where NDTV India’s Primetime show hosted by Ravish Kumar called on a set of panelists on his show who were actually ‘mimes’ and they showed the country the opinion of people under this current regime. The mimes were seeing mocking the current political climate in India and making all kinds of gestures which would be little any central government organization.

The twitter followers also had some sharp statements to be made in light of this current situation, while most of them were in support of the channel, some of them had clearly made vocal their dissent on the content of the channel.

The Editors Guild called this as a “direct violation” of the freedom of the press and similar sentiments were expressed by the Broadcast Editors’ Association(BEA). The Editors Guild of India strongly condemns the unprecedented decision of the inter-ministerial committee of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take NDTV India off the air for a day and demands that the order be immediately rescinded. The decision to take the channel off the air is a direct violation of the freedom of the media and, therefore, the citizens of India, and amounts to harsh censorship imposed by the government reminiscent of the emergency, the Guild said in a statement.

The Center has also come out with a statement saying that a 1 day NDTV ban is in interest of safety and security of nation, according to Venkaiah Naidu. According to some NDTV should not only be banned for 1 day but probed for its source of Foreign Funds.

Omar Abdullah also tweeted, “NDTV India ordered off the air, opposition leaders detained for wanting to show solidarity with family of dead soldiers. Ache din anyone?”

The new features included in these coaches include:

  • A GPS-based passenger information system above each door, a fire-and-smoke detector, and automatic room-freshener dispensers.
  • An airline-like light bar with numbers indicating upper, lower and middle berth.
  • Gel coating on toilet walls to make them “graffiti proof”.
  • Curtains for side berths as well as in the aisles, which are currently available in higher classes only.

The new coaches which have been developed in the Rail Coach Factory in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh has designed the service’s new coaches to be a part of four trains now – a set of coaches for a fifth train is in production and will be rolled out later.

In the fifth train, the small gap in the middle of the side lower berth -between the two lowered backrests – has been removed, which had challenged coach designers for decades.

A solution has been found by tucking a separate thin berth sideways between the wall and the side-lower seats. Its edge works as a handrest until the passenger pulls it up and lays it over the two seats to become a separate ‘gapless’ berth.

Palpreet’s NBA D-League Pick is a Blessing in Disguise

Palpreet, the winner of the National Finals of ACG-NBA Jump, India’s first national basketball talent search program, was selected 11th in the fourth Round of the NBA D-League daft held in New York, and was selected by the Long Island Nets, an affiliate team of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

Having witnessed the sheer quality on display in the NBA, the truth is that both the players have a long and arduous road ahead of them. While Satnam Singh making a name for himself by getting picked by the Dallas Maverick, Palpreet has catapulted to fame as well, having signed for the D-League this year and getting picked by the Long Island Nets.

But, Palpreet needs to toughen up to get selected to the NBA first team, not that he hasn’t before, he battled through knee injuries and came through an incredibly difficult nation-wide talent hunt organized by the NBA.

Dwayne Wade has put his point of view strongly supporting the establishment of the D-League, even though he never needed to experience any of it with his three NBA titles, “I give a lot of respect to guys that don’t have the easy path to the NBA, don’t get drafted and have to go to the D-League. They had to work their way in the league as a testament of their mental even more than their physical strength- to be able to stick with it, keep believing in yourself and make it to the NBA then sign contracts.”

The 6ft 9in hoopster, has been training in the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan, said he had trained hard and was confident of getting picked by a D League team in the draft.

The NBA D-League’s 16th season tips off on Nov. 11 with record 22 teams. The teams will hold training camps beginning on Oct 31, and will trim their rosters to 10 players on Nov 10, in advance of the start of the season. The Long Island Nets will play in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division, along with the Maine Red Claws(Boston Celtics), Westchester Knicks(New York Knicks), Raptors 905(Toronto Raptors), Delaware 87ers(Philadelphia 76ers) and Erie BayHawks(Orlando Magic).

SC asks Vijay Mallya to disclose all assets including foreign assets and assets of wife and children

The Supreme Court on Monday passed a strict warning to beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya to give full disclosure of foreign assets including those owned by his children and wife.

A bench of Justices Kurian Joseph and R F Nariman also pulled up Mallya for not giving details of $40 million which he had received from British firm Diageo on February this year.

The apex court, hearing a plea from Mallya, also directed the Bangalore Debt Recovery Tribunal to expedite the case and set a 2-months deadline to pronounce the order in the case.

Mallya had not disclosed his total foreign assets citing his NRI status, while his domestic assets were pegged at Rs 2,014 crore, overseas assets at Rs 748 crore. He had also repeated his stance to the Supreme Court that the atmosphere is not conducive for him to return to India and he’ll be sent to Tihar jail once he return.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the court that Mallya had provided wrong details of his assets in a sealed cover to the apex court. AG had also alleged that a lot of information had also been concealed, including a cash transaction to the tune of Rs 2500 crore, which amounted to contempt of court.

A clutch of 17 banks are fighting to get back Rs 9,000 crore money lent to Mallya’s now defunct Kingfisher Airlines that stopped flying in 2012. Though banks classified Mallya as a defaulter that year itself, banks have so far not been able to make any meaningful recovery in this case. These despite two lenders, State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank have tagged Mallya as a willful defaulter. The band consortium moved to the SC seeking action against Mallya.

Mallya had maintained that the banks had no right over information regarding his overseas movable and immovable assets as he was NRI since 1988. Taking the backing of his status he said he was not obliged to disclose his overseas assets, and added that his wife and three children, all US citizens, also need not disclose their assets.

Mallya has failed to return to India since his investigation which started on 2nd march, saying his personal liberty are at stake and he must have the freedom to mobilize funds.

Banks are more interested in putting him behind bars rather than getting their money back, Mallya informed the court, adding returning to India is meaningless in the current context.
