Rhinoplasty also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes or resizes the nose. A nose job can correct several concerns, including a visible bump on the nasal bridge, a droopy or enlarged nasal tip, a nose that’s off-center or crooked, asymmetry due to a previous injury and breathing problems.
Since rhinoplasty alters one of the most prominent parts of the face, it is incredibly important to learn as much as you can about this surgical procedure, and carefully research options.
What results can I expect?
Nose job results can vary and change as time goes on. It can take months to sometimes a year for swelling to completely subside. This is why many doctors advise waiting at least a year post-op before deciding to do a revision rhinoplasty. Some suggest waiting even longer as the nose tip continues to soften and reduce in swelling.
How should I prepare for a rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty is an invasive surgery. You will need to talk to your doctor and follow your doctor’s instructions on what to do prior to your procedure, which may include dietary, smoking and drinking restrictions as it leads to the day of the procedure. In addition, make sure to clearly explain your goals via wish pics, and explore with your physician what to expect prior to scheduling your procedure.
As with any surgery, many patients prepare their homes and arrange their schedules for an ideal recovery. Make sure you get plenty of time off work, you get help around the house, and give yourself time to heal.
What happens during a rhinoplasty?
In most rhinoplasty surgeries you’ll be put under with general anesthesia, which is the preferred method, as it allows the surgeon to protect the airway during surgery. However, some doctors perform nose jobs under local anesthesia, which numbs only the treated area.
During the procedure, the plastic surgeon will make incisions to access the bones and cartilage. The doctor then adds or removes bone and cartilage to change the form, and sometimes the function of the nose. At times, a doctor may use a silicone implant, but should be refused due to chances of infection.
What’s the recovery time from a nose job?
Immediately following surgery, expect visible swelling and bruising, which may include black eyes. Many people report feeling congested and have to breathe through their mouths.
Five to seven days post-op depending on your doctor’s preference and your healing progress, your cast and nasal packaging is removed. At this point, you can expect to typically breathe and sleep better.
After 10 to 14 days, swelling and bruising should subside enough for you to return to work and school, and other non-strenuous activities. Wait until a month to resume exercise and other strenuous activities.
What to think about?
One of the prominent features of the face, the nose can have a big impact on your self-image and confidence. If you’re unhappy with your nose and have been so for a long time, rhinoplasty is a reasonable option to consider. As with other cosmetic procedures, you are more likely to be happy with the results of rhinoplasty if you have clear, realistic expectations about what the surgery can achiee and if you share these with your plastic surgeon.
You can always expect temporary swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose after rhinoplasty. Other problems include
- Injury or holes to your septum
- Skin problems, including breakdown of skin tissue and irritation from the tape and bandaging.
- Preventive antibiotics may be given after surgery to reduce the risk of infection.
- Serious nasal blockage caused by swelling inside the nose
- Complications of anesthesia.
