Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017: Khurja RLD candidate Manoj Gautam kills brother for sympathy votes

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017, the UP police arrested Rashtriya Lok Dal candidate from Khurja constituency Manoj Kumar Gautam for allegedly murdering his own brother and a friend to gather sympathy votes. The police has also arrested Firoz, a sharpshooter, and accused Manoj Gautam’s friend in connection with the murders.

Gautam broke down easily during police interrogation, according to the reports. Gautam reportedly told the police that despite his best efforts, in which he spent crores of money, he hadn’t been able to get a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket. When he finally received a ticket from RLD Jat leader Ajit Singh, he felt he had to do everything in his power to take advantage of the opportunity.

“The best way to win, Gautam calculated was to ride on a sympathy wave that would be generated by the news of his brother’s death,” a senior officer involved in the probe told TOI.

As per reports, during interrogation, Gautam admitted to the crime and said he had been planning the murder for the past week. “He thought if someone in his family is killed, he will be able to blame his rivals and gain politically. He said he was hoping to ride on a sympathy wave. Gautam and Firoz have been booked for murder and for causing grievous hurt”, said SSP Sonia Singh.

As per the reports, Manoj Gautam, his brother Vinod and his friend Sachin had attended another RLD leader, Jayant Chaudhary’s rally in Khurja on February 6. They had left the venue, but his brother and friend couldn’t be found soon after they left. Manoj Gautam’s cousin Gurdeep had informed the police that Vinod Gautam and Sachin were missing, reported The Indian Express.
